Under the general supervision of the Head Librarian and Library Assistant, this position assists with creating and presenting library-related workshops in class and in the library.
The Student Library Assistant attends to the circulation desk, answers directional queries, and assists patrons in obtaining reserve books, files and other miscellaneous reserve items.
Reference questions should be referred to the librarian on duty.
This position requires an outgoing person who is able to engage with students of various abilities.
Because the Student Library Assistant may work with students, faculty, and the general public, professionalism and customer service is expected.
Essential Functions:
1.
Perform front desk activities, including but not limited to:
checking books in and out, re-shelving books, etc.
2.
Develop a full working knowledge of academic skills development materials and strategies.
3.
Participate and assist with outreach activities, e.
g.
presenting information regarding study skills and academic support available from the Library and Learning Center.
4.
Through courteous, professional behavior, represent the Library and Learning Center.
5.
Assist with the upkeep of the library.
6.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Librarian.
Minimum
Qualifications:
1.
High School Diploma or equivalent.
2.
Current HTIC student in the Liberal Arts Program.
3.

70 GPA in college coursework.
4.
Completion of at least 12 college credit hours.
5.
One HTIC faculty recommendation.
6.
Approval from the Office of Student Services.
7.
Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English.
8.
Strong interest in training and skills development.
9.
Ability to work with students one-on-one and in small groups.
10.
Ability to relate to students with various academic levels and needs.
Physical and Cognitive Requirements:
1.
Occasionally push, pull and position objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
2.
Read a computer screen, operate a computer terminal, and various office equipment.
3.
Able to talk and hear.
4.
Use hands and fingers to handle objects; reach with hands and arms.
5.
Sit or stand for duration of shift.
Occasional walking required.
6.
Read, analyze, and interpret written data (text and numeric).
7.
Interpret written and verbal instructions.
Schedule:
Must be available to work at least 6 hours per week during the academic term.
Work Environment:
Works primarily in a modern, air-conditioned environment.
The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
